Once you've prepared the surface, it's time to dampen the wall. Remember that with limewash, the surface you want to paint cannot be dry—otherwise, the limewash may dry out too quickly, resulting in dusting. To prevent this, simply spray the surface with water in 3-square-meter sections. This is important because spraying too much of your wall with water can cause it to dry out before you reach it.
Apply limewash using either a masonry paintbrush or a flat brush. Remember to stir your paint before and regularly during painting. Apply limewash in thin coats.
One of the most common questions from our clients who try painting with limewash is how many coats they should use. Be prepared for your limewashed surface to appear clear when you apply the paint. This is perfectly normal, and you shouldn't be too hasty about applying another coat, as it could hinder the drying process. Allow 24 hours between applying coats. We recommend at least four total coats.
Are there other colours of limewash than white?
While white is the most popular and common look for limewash, it doesn't have to be. Coloured limewashes are available to suit your needs and preferences. You can also purchase separate pigments—just remember to test them thoroughly when mixing to avoid different shades of your desired colour for different coats of limewash. Additionally, remember that on porous surfaces, the colour of your limewash will deepen.
The longevity of limewash paint – how very long does it last?
We recommend renewing limewash paint regularly—once every two years is typically sufficient. Of course, this is generally for outdoor limewash use, as indoor limewash isn't affected by severe weather conditions and can last longer in ideal scenarios.
